Ocean City New Jersey 2012

While the weekend started out a bit bumpy for us--Bob and Sue Gresh--as the leaders, it turned out to be quite a nice trip to OCNJ.  Upon attempting to leave our house for the meet point, our Miata decided it wanted to stay home in the garage.  Just muttered a faint click, click, click.  So, after loading our stuff into the Avalon, we headed to the Eden Resort to share the sad news that the other 9 cars going would have to follow a dirty Avalon with a nice-sized dent in the back bumper from a mishap earlier in the week.  Alas, though, Garry and Mary Lookingbill immediately offered us “Lil Guy”, their black Miata, and Bob and Garry went to his house to get it.  After reloading Lil Guy with our stuff and heading back to the Eden, we were on our way to Lewes, Delaware only 25 minutes behind schedule.  We can’t thank them enough for their generous kindness—it really saved our weekend (and everyone else’s I’m sure)!  The weather was beautiful.  As our group of 10 cars was directed to board the ferry, Jay and Bonnie heard the officer directing us say to the person on board the ferry that she had 11 Miatas heading on board.  She had included a beautiful Corvette that just happened to be in line behind our last car.  Boy, was that guy unhappy when we, thinking it was kind of funny, told him what we’d heard.  Let’s just say he was NOT amused.  The ferry ride was great but a quite choppy.  After arriving at our motel we drove into Ocean City, where a very nice parking lot owner let us park all 10 cars for free!!  We had a lovely dinner at Clancy’s By The Sea and then walked the boards.  On Sunday morning we drove to North Wildwood, where we toured the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and Gardens.  Getting out of Wildwood proved to be a hassle because of the traffic, but we made it out.  We encountered another much larger traffic tie-up along Rt. 47, but once it cleared we had smooth sailing.  After a few restroom breaks and, of course, an ice cream stop, we made it home.  All in all, a great weekend with great friends!

Havre de Grace, 2012

17 Miatas were in a real topdown mood a few weeks ago as we met outside Lancaster for a drive to Havre de Grace MD. Jerry & Lynne Long shamelessly plagiarized Barry Trainor’s Seafood Festival directions as our own—hope there are no copyright infringement issues! This is a beautiful drive through southern Lancaster County and northern Maryland that ends up where the Susquehanna empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect and was a real joy after the iffy spring we’ve been having.

Once there, some PACErs headed straight for the waterfront restaurants, others headed for the antique shops first. Some took advantage of the great weather to take a walk on the boardwalk at Tydings Park, which was a little less busy than during the seafood festival!

Wanting to see some new roads, we took a different route home, coming up the west side of the Susquehanna. OK, so we took that route to avoid the $5 toll on the Hatem Bridge! But we did get to drive some new roads. Coming into the Buck area, we immediately thought of Rosie’s Restaurant and an ice cream stop. Turns out Rosie’s is now a pizza place and there was no ice cream available anywhere in the area. Bummer!

Thanks to all who joined us on the drive. What more fun way could we have found to spend such a gorgeous day than to spend it driving around—and eating—with fellow PACErs!?

RAIN DOESN'T MATTER

In spite of the weather prediction 10 cars arrived at Fairview Commons on a chilly Sunday morning.  Thanks to John and Betty Saltzer for their efforts and a fun day of driving some new twisties and a awesome visit to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs.  One of those museums literally in our own back yards that we have never visited.  The group spent a couple of hours seeing the many different kinds of race cars, engines, tools, and many historic pictures.  This museum is definitely worth another visit.  After the museum stop and a run for some wine for dinner the group proceeded to the Chow Down Restaurant to enjoy food and drink and live country music. YeHA...it was Elvis and Johnny Cash and you couldn't beat the price of admission.

2012 KICKOFF DINNER? LUNCH? LINNER? DUNCH?

Well, whatever you call it, there was plenty of good food, so the 46 PACErswho attended the kickoff dinner at McCleary’s in Marietta were happy! We enjoyed a very nice meal in McCleary’s outdoor patio area. It was still a little chilly so it was nice it was enclosed! After lots of time visiting and catching up with PACErs we hadn’t seen since the last Cabin Fever dinner, we had a short business meeting. That’s what we like. Lots of time to eat, drink and be merry followed by a pithy meeting. This was Bob’s last meeting as president and after 6 years he (and Sue!) deserve a break. It will probably seem odd to them for a while just checking the schedule and showing up for drives. Bob & Sue were presented a plaque thanking them for all the work he has done these past few years for the club. Under his presidency the club has grown and we hosted two very successful regional events. Enjoy your retirement, Bob!

The most important piece of business at the meeting was to elect new officers. Garry Lookingbill will be stepping up to the big chair as president and Bill Howard will serve as our new vice president. Staying on will be Joe & Sandy Golesh, Events chairs, Ray Barner, Membership and Lynne Long, Newsletter. Thanks to all for agreeing to serve!

Nina Slenker again took charge of our 50/50 drawing and ?? Went home with $50. And some other lucky PACErs won very nice door prizes. (I don’t remember who or what) Finally it was time to head for home but we were just having too much fun to go home after it was over, so the Goleshes led a number of us on a scenic drive around the area. What a great way to kick off the topdown season! Hope to see you all out at one of the many fun drives this year.

Brady's Car Clinic and Dinner

We had 9 cars of PACE members show up for the drive and tour of Brady’s High Performance garage. Bob Brady gave us the Deluxe Tour of his shop explaining his Emissions testing equipment, the Tire mounting and balancing equipment, Air conditioning test and recharge machines, his modern computerized precision Alignment machine, Brake disk/drum turning equipment and Welding equipment. He explained each station and how his men and himself have been trained and certified to use the equipment. Bob spoke about his Exhaust fabrication expertise also making custom exhaust systems or repairing what is on a vehicle.

He focused on his mandate to all of his men to do it right the first time for the safety of his customers and so they will have confidence to return. We also found out that over half of his work is just regular run of the mill repairs on regular cars, and the rest is the specialized high performance work. He even has the equipment to reprogram the computer in most cars to either improve performance, or improve gas mileage. Then we went upstairs to the Dynamometer and he explained how that worked. Several of us drooled over the race cars he had up in the Dyno room too. Everyone was commenting on how they were impressed with the knowledge Bob had, his equipment, and the cleanliness of his shop.

After that we went to the Willow Street restaurant for a meal of our choice. I had Chicken sausage gumbo soup and a fresh tossed salad, homemade meatloaf with a baked potato. It was tasty for sure. The serving was so large I brought half of it home.

If you need any work done on any of your cars, give Bob Brady a call at 717-283-0056. Two club members already made appointments as we were finishing up our tour. Thanks again to Bob, and his lovely wife for hosting our club.

JANUARY 7 + 53 DEGREES  + 34 CARS = PACE RECORD

Those e-mails just kept coming and coming so we knew there would be quite a gathering.  But it is January and it is winter and some members even put their cars away for the cold weather, but this event was beyond all expectations.  If this is a preview of the year ahead hold on to your collective caps because we will blow all PACE records away.  The days was perfect.  Not for skiers or building snowman but for putting the top down on our favorite roadsters and enjoying the road, but in the month of January.  McCleary's put the group in their enclosed patio and 60 members enjoyed the food and friendship.
